Why working ON and not IN your business is critical to success.
When I start working with new clients, overwhelm is a common thread. As business owners and managers, your to-do lists seem to never end. There’s barely any time to answer customer queries, manage staff and do payroll, let alone any time to plan for the future. But here’s the thing… if you want to survive in this busy market, not to mention grow your brand and business, focusing ON your business rather than IN it, is imperative to success.
Now I understand that you may need to delegate or reprioritise (more on those later) to do so, but here are 8 amazing things that happen when you start working ON your business.
1. Growth – by focusing on what comes next, and stepping out a plan to get there, you gain direction, clarity and results.
2. Better relationships with clients, staff and suppliers – focus on building great relationships with people who matter most in your business because people like to be nurtured and, when they are, they perform better, refer you to their friends and nurture you in return.
3. More successful marketing campaigns – when you have time to plan, understand your market and develop strategies to meet their needs, you gain brand awareness, a more positive reputation and growth.
4. Up skilled staff – working ON your business means taking a step back to observe teams and staff to see how they perform, determine who needs help where and spend valuable time training staff for better efficiency, performance and happiness.
5. Policies and Procedures – they are hated by a lot of people because, let’s be honest, they are SO MUCH WORK. BUT, organised policies, procedures and manuals are invaluable when onboarding new staff and delivering training. They will save you time and money in the long run!
6. Self-reflection and education – with time away from the smaller daily tasks, upskill and educate yourself by attending seminars, workshops and networking events. Pass your learnings onto your team and you’ll all benefit, especially your business!
7. A better bottom dollar – take a moment to look at your pricing structures against the market, and determine if you’re getting the best deal for you and your customer. Is it time to negotiate with your suppliers?
Now, I know everyone is busy. But start with 1 hour a week and build from there. What can you do in 1 hour that will help your long-term business success? Just having the time to review how you do things, rather than getting caught up in what you’re doing, will make a massive difference.
